Eternity

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

It is not a perfume, a song, or a movie. Human beings have been given by God an eternal perspective. Think of the lengths to which the ancient Egyptians and other civilizations have gone to prepare for eternity, entombed with a canoe, food, treasures, and maybe even a favorite wife. In the words of Randy Alcorn, “It is God who created us to desire what we are made for…Our desires simply correspond to God’s intentions, because he implanted his intentions into us in the form of our desires.” Solomon tells us that time is planned by God (Eccle.3:1-9). The meaning of the plan is known only to God (3:9-15). This much we know, life is linked to eternity. God sees all the parts in light of the whole. We do not. It is inbred in human nature to be curious over our destiny. If eternity is beyond the grave, where is life leading us? Do you know the God of all your tomorrows? Look to Him for the freedom to accept life as God gives it. The answer, my friend, is not written in the wind. It is written in the blood of Christ dying for our sins. “Do we all realize that the most important thing we have to do in this world is to prepare ourselves for eternity?” Martyn Lloyd-Jones
