“Behold, they are all a delusion; their works are nothing; their metal images are empty wind.” Isaiah 41:29

Idolatry is the worldview of all unbelief. This reality is wallpapered over by contemporary philosophies and homemade worldviews. God’s hammer of truth comes down hard on idols. The world into which ancient Israel was born as God’s covenant nation swarmed with gods of all kinds. Tragically Israel, though warned of counterfeit gods, nevertheless was seduced by the worshipers of man-made idols. Egypt was saturated with false gods. Babylon’s license plates could easily have read “In Marduk we Trust.” God’s word to His people was, “how dare you rob me of my glory.” Humanity’s most serious crime, and that of Israel, was that they had not worshiped God with all their heart. The worst sin is to rob God of His glory. This is dark and foreboding but it must be said. We are literally smothered by idols of every kind. It doesn’t have to be a carved image. The disordered love of the human heart is idolatry. Money, sex, success, sports, any person or created thing can be the stuff of idolatry. God calls us to stand at attention. Be on guard. What thing or things have been allowed to displace God in our adoration and devotion? Jesus came to turn us from idols and serve the living God.

“Search me, O God, and open my eyes to any idols that are making a home in my heart. Lead me in the opposite direction from where they would take me. Show me how to love you more.”
