“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

Jesus claimed to be the truth by which sets men free from sin. The truth is Jesus Christ. Libraries and halls of learning have been known to post the words, “the truth shall make you free.” But Jesus’ claim is not that mere intellectual knowledge is somehow liberating, freedom from the slavery of ignorance. Sinful man’s greatest need is to have a vital relationship with Jesus Christ. The audience Jesus was addressing was self-deceived, thinking that an inherited physical relationship to Abraham guaranteed a right relationship to God. In short order Jesus made it clear that bondage to sin was the greatest slavery of all. Hope for real freedom is not found in a process of struggle in the fight against oppression, a belief that has made deep inroads into our current culture, but is found only in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Dear reader, are you free? Free from the condemnation that hangs over the head of those not “in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1). Are those chains of unbelief keeping you from the joy of forgiveness and the freedom of being a slave to Jesus Christ?

“Jesus himself reminds us that only truth, God’s truth, can bring real freedom. And Jesus’s warnings against false teaching should strike terror in the hearts of those who communicate untruth.” Jerram Barrs
