God is Love

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
1 John 4:7-8

Love is the language of truth. Love is the expression of truth. Truth expresses itself in love. True Christian love cannot thrive apart from an atmosphere of Christian truth. When the apostle John says why should we love one another he lays down the truth that we are to love one another because love is the very nature of God. What is God’s love like? It is unselfish and giving. It is voluntary. We cannot make God love us (Rom. 5:8, it is given of His own free choice). It is righteous. It never condones sin (Isa. 61:8, the Lord loves justice). It is everlasting (Jer. 31:3). Conclusion: Knowing God, as Father and Friend, will produce a self-giving life. A loveless life is a God-denying life. The stunning nature of God’s love is that His Son came into this world (out of the ivory palaces into this world of woe). He did this that we might live. Our good was desired. The wrath of God fell hard upon His Beloved Son. Love costs something. “Oh God, your love overwhelms me. Teach me to love as you have loved me.”

Reflection:
Do those close to me know that I love them?
How often do I sink into discontentment and resentment? What difference should God’s love have upon my thinking?
