The psalms of the OT show us how to express our desire for the nations to come to know God. Psalm 66 calls on the world to join in universal worship of the Lord. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that to “form a right idea of God’s greatness. . . [We must] remove from our thoughts of God limits that would make him small (and) to compare him with powers and forces which we regard as great.” (J.I. Packer, Knowing God). The powerful nations in our world today strut across the stage of human events as if they are in control of their destiny. The truth is the nations ”are like a drop from a bucket. And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales” (Isa. 40:15). It is right to pray that those nations who have their fist in God’s face discover His power to bring them to the dust bin of history. At the same time we should pray for nations like Kuwait who have amassed significant wealth from their national oil reserves, to turn from their hubris and cease their persecution of Christian converts from Islam. Impossible? (The Voice of the Martyrs “Prayer Guide”). God has ultimate power, not the nations.
