Going Fishing

“And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'” Matthew 4:19

Those who love to fish have their time-honored routines. Of course there is the place to fish. There are different options: a lake, a river, a pier at the ocean. Of high priority is the tackle box and the kind of bait, live or artificial? The good fisherman takes his friend, patience. You sit in a boat and cast the line and reel it in, time after time. Or you can sit on the bank and watch the cork bob in the water. The fishermen who followed Jesus were net casters. It was commercial work. If you are a follower of Jesus, do you see yourself as a fisherman? God has given us a variety of personalities, spiritual gifts, and opportunities. There is a gift of evangelism (Eph. 4:11), but that doesn’t mean we are not all to be about the work of seeing the lost come to salvation in Christ. We have the place to fish. It’s where God has placed us. The tackle box will help us in a brief conversation on a plane trip, a friendly conversation with a neighbor, taking a meal to a shut in, handing a Gospel of John to a repair man. The ways we can fish are almost endless. How’s the fishing going?
