Hope Remembering

“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23

How is your memory? Some have incredible memories with the ability to call up details about what they have read or experienced. The poet writer of Lamentations, probably Jeremiah, poured out his soul in remembering the awful and scary things that God has done to Israel, the city of Jerusalem, and the temple. But then in a deliberate act of remembrance he calms his soul with a wonderful truth. His lament ran to the sanctuary of God’s perfections. He saw God as an ally not an enemy. How many times have some of us sung, “Great is Thy faithfulness…all I have needed Thy hand hath provided?” The extremities of God’s judgment on His people, Israel, in the middle of incredible miseries, truth was remembered. As one writer has said, “Hope springs from truth rehearsed” (Mark Vroegop). God’s mercy never ends, waiting is not a waste (see 3:25), our sufferings are not the end of the story, and no matter how bad things get, God is always good. We would do well to put our memories to their best use by making a decision to think the right thoughts about God. His love never ceases. Count on that.
