“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord?” Job 41:1
March 21, 2025
Job gets the final word from God. In chapters 39:1-41:34, God peppers Job with fifty questions. Job had wanted to know why he was suffering. “Why is God picking on me?” God gives Job a big lesson in humble pie. How little we know. There is a lot more we don’t understand. The biggest and badest of creatures is Leviathan, probably the greatest of the marine creatures, or dinosaurs, something like a plesiosaur (Defender’s Study Bible). Is God strong enough to control evil and keep it on a leash? We meet two hellish beasts (Behemoth, 40:15, and Leviathan). What about God’s big enemies? God wins (Psa. 74:13-14; Isa. 27:1). Is not Satan in the background here? B and L serve as types of Satan and his power. This we know, though Job may have been foggy on this, Satan is the ruler of this world. He was unleashed to some extent on Job, but under God’s control. What did it cost the incarnate Son of God to win the victory over “Leviathan” (Col. 2:13-15). God does not owe us explanations about all that is behind our sufferings. But this we know. Nothing can punch us above God’s weight. How strong is God? He is strong enough. Leave the rest to Him.
