“if you are pure and upright, surely then he will rouse himself for you and restore your rightful habitation.” Job 8:6

Have you ever experienced a well-meaning Christian who in the name of being a comforter only makes matters worse? Bildad was one of three “friends” of Job who offers a lesson in what not to say to someone who is going through the dark night of their soul. Bildad had limited knowledge of Job’s situation and some seriously flawed opinions about the pain and suffering of Job. He counsels a kind of prosperity theology. Bildad pours salt in Job’s wounds by advising earning God’s mercy. “Job is getting what he deserved. God does not want His children to be sick. Therefore, Job needs to repent and obey God to gain God’s favor again.” The truth was and is that suffering cannot be explained merely in terms of cause and effect. Beware of “comfort-givers” who take verses out of context, have a defective theology, and make the Bible a weapon in their hands. Do you know someone who is suffering? Ask God for wisdom, humility, and listen to their cries. We can only understand who we love.

“O Lord over all pain and suffering, keep me from shallow answers and a condemning spirit. Help me to be a gentle and wise comforter.”
