In Honor of Veterans

“Soldiers also asked him, ‘And we, what shall we do?’ And he said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.'” Luke 3:14

When soldiers, upon their repentance under John the Baptist’s ministry, asked about their duties to the government, they were told to be honest and be content with their wages. Serving in the military is an honorable service to one’s country. In anticipation of Veteran’s Day in our Sunday morning service, four characteristics of veteran’s were mentioned: Commitment to something bigger than self, Duty to protect our country, Honor for making the necessary sacrifices, and Pride in serving under a flag that represents many things we hold dear, not the least of which is freedom. Do you know someone who has “served in the active duty military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable” (Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations)? These men and women deserve our prayers and appreciation. Patriotism can be exhibited in a variety of ways. In the biblical context of duty to one’s government, “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor” (1 Peter 2:17).
