“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” These words are found at the beginning of A.W. Tozer’s timeless book, The Knowledge of the Holy. Getting our thoughts right about God is a matter of urgency for every human being, especially Christians. To quote Tozer further, “The low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us.” The prophet Jeremiah was called by God to speak to a rebellious people, Israel. Finally, the other shoe of national judgment had been dropped on God’s covenanted people. Their relationship with God was troubled. Are we delighted in the same things in which God delights? Getting our thinking in line with what God says about Himself results in the pivotal point for much of the rest of theology. We must not start with the problem of evil. Start with God. Right thoughts about God form the basis for right thoughts about life, its purpose and problems. Right thoughts about God develop a conscience that is sensitive to moral matters, knowing that we are to please God and are accountable to Him. Right thoughts about God protect us from the subtleties and allurements of idolatry. Are you prepared for the journey ahead with however many days God gives you? Siri can’t help with this. Only the navigational wisdom of God’s Word, the Bible, can enable us to know God.
