Identity! Do you know who you are? The thought of the rebirth in 1 John 2:29 ignites the thought of the splendor of God’s love for us. The love of God determines what we are in Christ. The fact that we are the children of God, if indeed you are, is a fact. It is unmerited love. In an act of divine choice we became God’s possession. Our security is firmly in His hands. This spiritual reality explains the fact of why the world does not understand our personal relationship to Jesus Christ. To this world the new birth is incomprehensible. Have you not noticed how Hollywood never gets this right. Christians are an enigma. The world tries to use conceptual boxes in order to explain Christians, “religious right,” “getting religion,” “turning over a new leaf,” “a wish fulfillment.” What is really important is that God knows who belong to Him, “if you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (John 15:18).

“But what matters the hatred of this world if He knows and loves us? Most fearful of all pronouncements ever to fall on human ears is that word to those who profess to know Him but whose works deny Him: ‘I never knew you.’” Vance Havner
