Learning to Hate Evil

“O you who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 97:10

“We do not naturally hate evil. In fact, the opposite is the case. We naturally love sin…We must learn to hate sin, and we will if we are getting to know God. If we do not, we will increasingly hate God.” (James Boice, Psalms, An Expositional Commentary)
If we are followers of Jesus Christ we will be at war with the world, the flesh, and the devil. In continuing to quote Richard Sibbs, the Puritan, (If we hate evil);“If we are reproved for sin and not get angry. If we truly hate sin will welcome whatever help we may get in dealing with it and driving it from our lives. ‘Those that swell against reproof do not appear to hate sin.’” It is extraordinarily important to grasp the seriousness of our call “to take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day” (Eph. 6:13). Dear reader, are you fully engaged in thinking, living, loving, and fighting evil like Jesus Christ? In doing so, don’t be surprised that the masses will react to you as they did to Christ when He was on earth (J. Boice).
