Man’s Way or God’s Way

“Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” 1 Corinthians 1:20

If you know anything about the church at Corinth, you would know that it was beset with problems. Paul wrote his letter to this church to correct how the sins of the culture had become the sins of the church. Churches in our day and time need to know that it is folly to try to match wits with God. Four questions are posed. The cross of Jesus Christ has turned the tables on the self-sufficiency of human wisdom. Take some examples by way of comparison: Man’s way – people say “Mankind is basically good.” We hear, “I’m OK, you’re OK.” God’s way says, The heart is desperately wicked, who can know it (Jer. 17:9). All have sinned. Trust the Lord completely; do not ever trust yourself (Prov. 3:5). Those “self-help” books under the names best selling authors can be dangerous to your spiritual health. Man’s way- We avoid problems and do everything we can to get out of them. God’s way says conflicts and problems are for our good and for your spiritual growth. They help you to see what is within yourself (Matt. 15:18-20). Rejoice that God uses them to bring you to maturity (Jas. 1:2-4). These comparisons are drawn from “Self-Confrontation” Developed by John C. Broger.
