“He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'” Luke 16:31

Has the thought ever crossed your mind that if someone could come back from the dead, from hell no less, that would convince unbelievers to believe in Christ? The rich man in the story about the most horrible thought imaginable pleaded for someone to be able to return from the torments of hell. That would make sinners repent. It would not happen. People don’t go to hell for a lack of evidence but because of unbelief. The Scriptures are sufficient for personal salvation (“if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets”). “Hell is a place that is self-chosen” (J.I. Packer). The self-deceit and hardness of the human heart should not be underestimated. It was Katherine Hepburn, the movie star, who said, “I do not fear hell. I don’t look forward to heaven. I expect to go off into oblivion.” The most horrible thought imaginable is to die and experience eternal conscious physical and spiritual torment in hell forever. Time is short. Jesus Christ is the only one who can save us from hell.
