Patriotism: Good or Bad?

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Romans 13:1

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Law of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” (“The Declaration of Independence” July 4, 1776, opening paragraph). Our nation, the United States of America, had a unique beginning. Many of the foundational thoughts of our founding fathers flowed from a Judeo-Christian worldview. The following are some of the benefits of patriotism in a nation (“Politics According to the Bible” Wayne Grudem). “(1) A sense of belonging to a larger community of people, which provides one aspect of a person’s sense of identity and his obligation to others. (2) A shared sense of pride in the achievements of other individuals to whom one “belongs” as fellow citizens of the same nation (including pride in athletic, scientific, economic, artistic, philanthropic, or other endeavors). (3) A sense of obligation to live by and transmit to newcomers and succeeding generations a shared sense of moral values and standards that are widely valued by those within the nation.”
The above are only three of the seven factors that define genuine patriotism.
May God enable us as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to exemplify what it means to submit to government authority in a biblical way and not be ashamed of being a citizen of our nation which God brought forth 250 years ago.
