“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.” Psalm 115:3,4

Author Donald McCullough has given an insightful summary of religion in modern America; “When the true story gets told, whether in the partial light of historical perspective or in the perfect light of eternity , it may well be revealed that the worst sin of the church at the end of the twentieth century has been the trivialization of God. . . . We prefer the illusion of a safer deity, and so we have pared God down to more manageable proportions.” Play dough gods are not only the legacy of the last century, their ever changing shapes have captured our present culture. The psalmist was mindful that the pagan nations surrounding Israel could not comprehend having an invisible god. The truth was that the malleable deities of Israel’s neighbors were manufactured by minds totally deceived by sin. We see this all around us today. Conveniently, many create a domesticated god who is incapable of doing anything about evil. So they throw him over-board. Wrong thoughts about God are the devil’s material for crafting a god of “health and wealth.” The good old American way, “God’s will for us is prosperity.” Just have enough faith. Play dough gods stare back at their makers incapable of speaking, hearing, seeing, with no power, no personal presence. Meditate on this: God makes Himself known to us in Christ. Flood your mind with what God has said about Himself.
