Politics and Our Missions Mandate – Part 1

“Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Selah” Psalm 67:4

October 17, 2025

The nations will be glad because of the rule that God proclaims. Therefore, pray that the nations praise God. In the church of Jesus Christ there is the ever present danger that political activism will eclipse the command to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. This was Israel calling as celebrated in Psalm 67. This psalm and the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20 are theological twins with different historical contexts. In Psalm 67:4 The blessing of God is His undeserved love. This blessing is to result in the nations coming to know God. How does this truth flourish in the church while political activism clamors for attention?First, it matters little. It matters much. Little? The greater story is God’s redemptive-kingdom plan centered in Jesus Christ. Much? The place of nations and national leaders serve as God’s instrument for the accomplishment of His glory. Secondly, God has ordained the strength and moral vigor of nations as a means of advancing the gospel (1 Tim. 2:1-6). National leaders like Cyrus, king of the Persians, was used by God in the chastening of the nations. The nations serve as the staging area from which the church goes into all the world. The peace and prosperity of our own nation has provided the goodness of freedom to preach Christ. We will pause here for today. Am I allowing political issues to sap my mental, physical, and spiritual energy to the detriment of world mission activism in my own church? Does the call to take the gospel to all nations pulsate in the soul and life of my local church?
