“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

Vance Havner has memorably said, “New Year’s Day has a bad reputation because it is the birthday of so many resolutions that die in infancy!” However, there is a resolution that should be made and kept: READ THE BIBLE. The corruption of our culture is downstream from the low standards Christians have with regard to taking the Bible seriously. The Bible is the only book God has written. It is the Book of books. We have a book, not merely about God, but one that is from God. It is the voice of of God. Theologian R.C. Sproul has said that the Bible “is a measuring rod by which things are judged. We may use many lesser standards to regulate our lives, but all such regulations must be subordinate to Scripture.” The profitability of the Bible is premiered by teaching and preaching it. Too many churches have substituted topical, felt need talks. The Bible is profitable by showing us where we are wrong. Clear, strong Bible preaching puts a match to human opinions masquerading as “insights.” Rightly dividing the Scriptures shows us how to deal with life’s problems and training us in how to grow up in Christ. Knowing God better comes from knowing who God is and what He has said. Do you want to cut your moral, decisional, and priority losses? Get to work by reading and studying the Bible for all its worth. It’s worth a lot.
