“Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew?” Job 38:28

Job tried to box with God about his troubles. Job’s suffering had clouded his mind about God. Personal misery can do that. But Job needed a lesson regarding God’s awesome sovereignty over all things. God had been silent for thirty-seven chapters. It could have seemed that God did not care. So God takes Job to school with fifty questions (38:1-41:34). We, like Job, may want to know why we are suffering, “Why is God picking on me?” One of those questions asked of Job was, “Has the rain a father?” The general worldview at that time was that the storm God, Baal, was the one who sent the rain. Wrong! Just like in our day, many think we can save the planet, if we can just get the weather under control by changing the climate. God does have a plan for our planet’s future. Think of fervent heat (2 Pet. 3:12). But back to Job. How little we really understand about snow, hail, rain, lightning, frost, and ice (Job 38:22-30). We don’t know what we don’t know. The next time it rains think of what God knows and we don’t. That should help us put our pain and suffering in better perspective.
