Seven Brothers and One Bride

“Jesus said to them, ‘Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?'” Mark 12:24

It’s Tuesday and Sunday is coming. Tuesday of Good Friday week was a busy day. Jesus deftly answered questions regarding faith, authority, prophecy, taxes, His deity, and resurrection. After all, He knew the Scriptures and the power of God as no other could. The Sadducees, who denied the resurrection, tried to trivialize the resurrection by posing a frivolous question. The custom of marrying the widow of one’s brother was turned into a who-will-be-the-widow’s-husband-in-the-resurrection after having married seven brothers. Unbelief creates distortions and absurdities where there are none. Jehovah’s Witnesses do this by trying to distort the truth of the Triunity of God into a belief in three gods. Jesus pinned the Sadducees’s theological shoulders to the mat by telling them they were ignorant of the Scriptures. He took them to Exodus 3:6 which made it plain that God does not abandon at the grave those with whom He has fellowship in life. The point: Death doesn’t get the last word in the life of God’s people. God has the power to raise the dead. For the Christian a funeral is merely a temporary good-bye to those who are in their eternal home with God.
