“I will cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. . . . My heart is stedfast, O God, I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!” Psalm 57:2,7

God has given us the “Psalms of darkness,” Lament psalms, to enable us to shape our experience when our lives are disturbed. David is in a cave (1 Sam. 24:1). Here he is bold and animated, savoring the situation for its opportunities. One of the stabilizing truths that is designed to keep us grounded is that God has the power to help us. He is sovereign. He is the supreme Ruler of the world and yet He is not remote from our circumstances. Are you centering your sorrows and fears on God’s rule over the pressures that threaten you? David found time to sing praises to the Lord while “trapped” in a cave. Living according to God’s sovereignty means submitting to it. This includes accepting that there are many things we may not understand as God works out His purposes in our lives. Nothing happens until it is filtered through God’s permissive will.

“No, we ought not thank God for our affliction. But we should thank Him, and robustly, for the sovereign love, wisdom, and power with which He will overrule our seemingly evil circumstance to work eternal good for us through them.” Margaret Clarkson, Destined for Glory
