“How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave.” Lamentations 1:1

Imagine holding in your hands a new born baby of about 8 lbs. She looks at you. What is she seeing? She cries until she is fed. She yawns. You melt. Such a darling. An eternal soul totally helpless, innocent, needing your love and attention. Then in the morning hours after the ballots were counted, you become sad. You grieve. Why? Voters have given a green light to more abortions. It has become an obsession. So many want the availability of ripping the unborn from the womb. It’s morally insane. Jeremiah, the prophet, begins his lament over Jerusalem. Death and destruction were everywhere. God had turned the city over to its enemies. The prophet sits under the grief tree. What does God teach us about grief, sadness, and group lament? We grieve over our losses. This is a God-designed emotion for living in a fallen world. Why are so many driven to call abortion a reproductive health care right? “Health care?” A baby fresh out of the womb, only a few weeks or months before, pulled apart and discarded. This is grounds for genuine lament. Sadness speaks. Let’s see what we can learn from the book of Lamentations about grief. “Lord, teach us how to grieve.”

“Lord, I know you grieve over sin. You alone fully understand the pain of babies being offered up on the alter of personal peace and prosperity. Give me the grace to work though the might-have-beens of a culture turning its back on you.”
