Sleeping Churches

“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.” Revelation 3.2

It is possible for a church to slowly slip into a spiritual coma and lose its effectiveness. You might say, “I don’t attend such a church because I don’t attend a church.” That’s two problems. Churches don’t go to sleep unless their congregations slip into a spiritual coma. The city of Sardis had a history of having been twice sacked because of its lack of alertness to its defense. Who are the culprits? Self-deception, thinking all is well, by relying on ritual, activities, programs, and exciting music. Accommodating the world is administering spiritual anesthesia to too many churches. It is ironic that while our culture is being afflicted with the “woke” movement, Christians are sleeping. Wokeism preaches a false gospel, declaring that salvation is deliverance from oppression, that human guilt is being an oppressor, that sin is access to power, that privilege is total depravity. Christians, it’s back to the Word of God, repenting of spiritual lethargy, speaking truth to the church and to the culture. Perhaps you could be that spiritual wide-awake remnant that is remaining faithful to Christ. Do I need recapture that spiritual hunger and dependence on God I once had?
