Stand Firm

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth….” Ephesians 6:13-14

Mary is overwhelmed. Three small children to tend to, a part-time job in a local shop, and a husband who seems to be indifferent to her load. Ted feels the pressure of new standards laid down by his employer in seminars on race and sex issues which contradict his biblical convictions. International war drums are beating as Russia and China seem to be preparing for invasions of nearby nations. The fact is that there is an invisible war taking place every day in Mary and Ted’s lives as there is in ours. We are informed that our enemy, Satan, is crafty, vicious, hates God and all God’s people. Three times in Ephesians 6:11, 13, 14 Christ’s soldiers, that’s who we are, are commanded to “stand,” “stand firm.” This means determination in the face of a ruthless foe. God has given us weapons, warrior’s battle gear, for the hand to hand combat ahead. Unfortunately there are Christians who resort to comic book tactics such as looking for demons behind every bush, being careful not to let a demon take up a rent-free place in one’s soul, or doing battle with “territorial spirits.” The apostle Paul gives us our marching orders for spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6:10-20. Simply put, it is by repentance, faith, and obedience. Darkness is turned to light as we advance by going on to maturity in Christ. We are about to get into specifics as we fasten on the belt of truth. Are you ready for “boot camp?”
