Storms Tell Stories

“The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters.” Psalm 29:3

“Apocalyptic.” That was the word used by a rescue worker being interviewed about the devastation of Hurricane Helene. It seems that human beings have some kind of sense of the finality of human history. Scenic mountain streams had turned into raging rivers sweeping away everything in their path. David had witnessed the sound and fury of a thunderstorm that swept over the land of Canaan, the Promised Land. The shock and awe of it was understood as the voice of God (seven times “voice” is used). The storm god, Baal, of the Canaanites was a fiction. Storms speak of the sovereignty of God. He is in control over all that we call disasters (Isa. 45:7). The majesty and power of Almighty God in storms is a display of what will be His final judgment. Nature is under the judgment of God. The whole creation “groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now” (Rom. 8:22). Thunder, lightning, and raging flood waters are a call for sinners to repent (Lk. 13:1-7). However, the Lord’s peace is available to those who put their trust in Him. The current generation is being mislead regarding earth’s climate. Climate change has been a factor since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the garden. Noah’s global flood came as the judgment of God. It is the climate change of the judgments that will befall nature in the Day of the Lord that should drive us all to our knees (Rev. 6-16). The winds of judgment will come howling and sweep all away who have not found refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ.
