“Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.” Ecclessiastes 7:3
September 20, 2024
How is Ecclesiastes like a child at the beach? It shows us our sandcastles, the tide, and the waste. Solomon wrote this book with an intentional look at life in a fallen world, life without seeing things as they really are. It is a life of chasing after the wind. Puzzling, bewildering, and fleeting. That is why attending a funeral can be more profitable than going to a party. Laughter can be a narcotic. That’s the danger in living for fun and pleasure. The difference between a Christian and a non-Christian is that the Christian has looked at death in the eye and comes out on top. The non-Christian looked at death, tucked and ran back to the party. Death should force us to think. Am I spending life as God would have me spend it? What are my priorities? How is my use of time? What about my relationships? Is God at the center of my thinking? Am I taking life seriously?

Don’t let the sorrow of death be wasted on you. It should make us ponder spiritual realities.
