Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18

What if the Bible had been written in braille, a system of writing or printing for blind people? Imagine trying to decipher letters of the alphabet by various arrangements of raised points, which may be read by touch. This dot system was developed in 1829 by Louis Braille, a French teacher of the blind. The Bible would be a closed book to all who were not trained in the power of trained touch. The psalmist was in desperate need of comfort living as he was in difficult circumstances. A sense of need for God’s illuminated Word is found in the words “open my eyes.” Was he blind? His cry is a reminder that we have no natural ability to understand God’s Word. It takes God the Holy Spirit to make our minds grasp what God has revealed. The words that are on the page must become our counselors making it possible for us to see our way through the darkness around us. Have you experienced that? When we are born again our spiritual blindness, as an unbeliever, is miraculously transformed. I can remember that taking place as a fourteen year old new Christian. I found myself under the covers in my bed on cold nights with a flashlight wanting to understand the Bible. I began to see who God was, who I was, how God wanted me to think and live. I saw Christ who had been delivered up for my sins. What had been braille were letters and words that found a home in my heart. Like the blind man in John 9:25, “one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.” H
A time to praise God: “How wonderful, O Lord, is your teaching. How precious that I can see the hope of your calling and the riches of all that I have in Christ” (Eph. 1:18).
