The Call

“And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” Romans 8:30

When was your last call? There was a time when calls were either station to station or person to person. The latter were more expensive. We’ve come a long way since then. Cell phones have changed everything. We can even have special signature call tones. In the Bible the word call is often used to refer to a “general call” which is an invitation to believe the gospel like the one one in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened.” This call can be either received or rejected. But the call spoken of in Romans 8:30 is a special and effective call. This is the call for only those upon whom elective love was set and who are destined to be conformed to the image of Christ. And you are justified (more on that later). This special call is one that the Holy Spirit gives which brings us to Christ. This call is internal, specific, and is effective in saving us. We don’t necessarily feel it, but it is a call that awakens our faith in Christ and raises us from spiritual death to spiritual life. Have you put your trust in Jesus Christ for eternal life? If so, the Holy Spirit made that possible. This is the wonderful third pearl of promise that is to keep us from ever falling away from Christ and give us rejoicing hearts.
