The Elijah Complex

“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” Romans 11:3

We know something about Elijah, the prophet, from 1 Kings 19:10,14. After a great victory over the false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, he fled to the desert to feel sorry for himself. Paul presents Elijah in Roman 11 to illustrate the principle of the remnant. The time of Elijah was one of widespread apostasy. Israel was in a terrible back-slidden condition. Elijah considered himself to be alone in his loyalty to God. It was not true. There were seven thousand who had not bowed the knee to Baal. God has always preserved for Himself a remnant of born-again Jews and even a remnant of Gentile believers within professing Christianity. The remnant within Israel was made up of believing Jews who have always existed and will exist because God will never forsake the Abrahamic Covenant (Mic. 2:12-13; Rom. 9:27; 11:5). We in the Church Age may think we are alone in seeking to live for God in evil times. Not so. Be assured that God has His remnant of servants who have not bowed the knee to the world, the flesh, and the devil. Are you one those who is ardently seeking after God no matter what the cost?
