The Eternal God

“To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:17

It takes time for human beings to gain wisdom and learn from experience. This handicap does not characterize God. He does not grow in knowledge, wisdom, or experience. The God of the Bible is an eternal God. He has no beginning or end. The apostle Paul in writing to Timothy erupted in a doxology which blew the roof off. God had taken a religious zealot, blinded by sin, Satan, and self-righteousness and made him a model servant of Jesus Christ. Such a statement of thankfulness is for all that God is: sovereignty (God is in absolute control of all things), immortality (death can’t get to Him), and eternality. God’s existence can’t be measured by time. When Jonathan Edwards, one of the greatest of theologians, read the words of verse 17 he said that “he had a sense of the glory of the divine being,” and “prayed to God that I might enjoy him.” Undoubtedly Edwards realized, as we should, that God can be trusted to remain what He has always been. He who has loved us in Christ will never change His mind about us and cease to love us in the future (J. Boice, Foundations of the Christian Faith). God will not drop us like a hot potato and treat us as if He never knew us. Let us marinate our minds in such comfort. H
