The Failure of Human Wisdom

“And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.” Ecclesiastes 1:13

Can human reason arrive at the meaning of life? Many are convinced that given time and enough changes in the way we think and plan for the future, therein can we have hope for a better world. One of the smartest men who ever lived tells us that human wisdom does not hold the key to life. Solomon says that we can investigate all the data of life, but the clue is not there. Human brain power cannot change reality. It can help to identify the problem, but it can’t give the solution. Actually, the best minds can only increase sorrow. As someone has said, “Wisdom only calls attention to the sour notes; it cannot bring the singing into tune.” So what is our hope for handling the riddle of life? It is God’s wisdom that can change reality. The Queen of Sheba “came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and indeed a greater than Solomon is here” (Matt.12:42). And who was that? The Lord Jesus Christ. He had the wisdom from above (Jas. 3:17). We have to come to terms with God. Why? Because of what Christ has done for us. The answer, my friend, is not written in the wind. It is not found in the human intellect. The answer is not within. The purpose of human life on earth is found in Jesus Christ.
