The Father of Rain

“Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew?” Job 38:28

When Job wanted a hearing with God about the “why” of his suffering, He got an answer. God confronted Job with questions he could not answer. One of them was the weather, namely, who is in control of rain (Job 38:25-30)? Over 40,000 thunderstorms occur on the earth each day. Moisture is constantly being taken up into the air from the earth’s surface. The process of evaporation and condensation were probably beyond Job’s understanding, but one thing for sure for us, as well as it was for Job. Who is in control of when, where, and how much rain is a call to be in awe of the God of creation. For those who didn’t know, there is NO Mother Nature. Rain is a God-ordained means of cleaning the atmosphere, watering the soil for plant growth, and sustaining animal and human life. God stores the thunderclouds with an average of 100,000 short tons of water, or about 6 trillion raindrops. It was rain hitherto unknown before the worldwide flood of Noah’s day that brought judgment to a wicked human race. The Canaanites worshiped their make-believe rain god, Baal. The psalmists take delight in declaring the glory and power of God over the weather. The next time it rains call to mind Psalm 147:8, “He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth, he makes grass grow on the hills.” Job needed a lesson in the sovereignty and goodness of God, not a lecture on suffering. Let the rain be the occasion for worship and praise for showers of blessing.
