Replays! They seem to dominate some sports. Was he safe at home plate? Was his knee down when he fumbled the ball? Instant replays can often settle a dispute. But there are no instant replays when it comes to a person’s motives, even our own. Wisdom tells us that only God can accurately judge our motives. Why? Because God is sovereign over all our plans and dreams. He alone knows our hearts because God is omniscient and has all the facts necessary to justly render a verdict. There will be injustices when it comes to human judgment. In your own estimation, have you ever been misjudged? It happens. We may think that we are right in a matter. We may be. But we may not be. Maybe I don’t know enough or I can be self-deceived. And to top it off, if we can’t judge our own motives, why do we think we can judge the motives of others (Matt. 7:1, “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.”). We are to take comfort in the justice of God’s judgment. He will deal fairly with us. Keep basic truths in mind. Some judgments are necessary in order to obey the commandments of God. We can be misjudged by others. We can even misjudge ourselves. We can be overly critical of ourselves. Someone may say you were being harsh when actually your were doing the loving thing. We may think we were doing the loving thing, when actually it was mixed with some selfishness. Stand at ease. God alone can determine if our ways are innocent. He loves us and gives us wisdom by which we may live.
