The Gift of Propitiation

“Whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.” Romans 3:25

What wonderful gifts God has bestowed upon the Christian. These spiritual blessings are found in Christ. One of those is the amazing fact that Christ’s death on the cross removed us from the wrath of God which we deserved. God has been rendered propitious toward us. Because of the price Jesus Christ paid on the cross, namely His blood, the justice of God has been satisfied. The lid on the ark of the covenant was called “the mercy seat.” In the Greek it is the same word for propitiation. It was the place the blood of the sacrifice was sprinkled (Exodus 25:22). It was the meeting place of God and man where the mercy of God is available. The cross is that meeting place. Jesus’ death was a wrath-absorbing sacrifice. This truth pulsates at the very core of the gospel message. We don’t have to do anything to get God to be satisfied with us. There is no final judgment to fear.

“O Lord, I am overwhelmed by what you have done for me. Thank you that Jesus Christ became our mercy-seat so that guilty sinners can meet you.”
