“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'” Matthew 25:40

There are some verses in the Bible that get more than their share of abuse, or we might say, misinterpretation. Social gospel and social justice devotees insist on the words “the least of these” to be referring to to all who are oppressed, hungry, distressed, or needy. This reflects a total misunderstanding of the immediate context. Jesus is referring to the most needy of Jesus’ disciples and includes all believers who are spreading the good news of the gospel. Judgment day is coming. How will the nations have treated Jesus’ followers? It is critical to understand that Jesus identifies Himself with those who belong to Him. “Their suffering is His suffering.” Fellow believers, how is our compassion showing up for the needy among Christ’s people, our brothers and sisters in Christ?

“Heavenly Father, guide me to those who are loyal to you and committed to declaring the gospel of Jesus Christ. I want to encourage them in the midst of their needs.”
