The Strength or Decline of a Nation

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

What does the future hold for our nation? No one knows for sure. But one thing is sure is that wisdom tells us that a nation is no stronger than the character of its people. The proverbs of Solomon were written in the context of how a theocracy (Israel) was to sustain itself in the midst of idol-driven nations. Israel’s prosperity was conditioned upon its obedience as a covenant people (Deut. 28). The consequence of disobedience to God’s law would be His judgment. There is something here for Christians within America, though we are a constitutional republic and not a theocracy. The character and virtues of a society determine its endurance. The church of Jesus Christ is to be a light on a hill. The presence of God-pleasing believers and strong Bible churches contribute to freedom, justice, mercy, and stability within a nation. In other words, a Christian worldview that permeates the various institutions promotes governing vitality. This does not mean that the administrators (executive, judicial, and legislative branches of our government) have to be Christians. But no nation can survive its own moral decay and the corruption of its leadership. Sadly, there are cultural winds blowing that spell civilizational collapse. The failure to instill patriotism in the assimilation of immigrants, a judicial system taken over by being kind to the cruel and being cruel to the kind, moral relativism, and self-indulgence mixed with prosperity is a recipe for the demise of national flourishing. Pray for America.
