The Unpardonable Sin

Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Matthew 12:31

The Holy Spirit can be resisted, insulted, lied to, tested, grieved, and quenched. But in each case forgiveness is possible. However, there is one sin against the Spirit that is not forgivable. Blasphemy against the Spirit is unpardonable. You may have talked with someone who think they have committed such a sin. Jesus told the Pharisees when they accused Him of being in league with Satan, a sin against the Son of man was forgivable but not against the Spirit. It is bad to have wrong ideas about the identity of Jesus, but slandering the Spirit was a sin against a clear manifestation of the power of God as evident in His miracles. To commit this sin required the personal presence of Jesus on earth. So, in that sense, it can’t be committed today. To deny the witness of the Spirit to Christ precluded repentance. Without repentance there is only hell waiting after one’s death. What about in our day and time? Rejecting the Word of God, hardening one’s heart against the gospel, and refusal to receive Jesus Christ for eternal life results in eternal loss. It’s a terrible thing to fall into the hands of an angry God. There are no second chances. At this time Jesus is calling sinners to come to Him, all who are weary and heavy laden and He will give you rest. Let the apostle Paul tell you if there is any hope for someone who has persisted in unbelief but is still breathing (1 Tim. 1:13). H

A time to pray: “O merciful God, I pray anew for those I know who are still alive physically, but dead spiritually and only a heart-beat away from eternity.”
