We humans like to flatter ourselves. Many, if not most, believe that we are all basically good, deep down inside. Therapists, very popular these days, rarely diagnose the human condition accurately. When was the last time you heard the word sin in explaining what is wrong with humanity? The truth is that we are separated from God and we are not good at self-evaluation. The human heart is more deceitful than anything else. The Hebrew says, “It is incurable.” Emotion, the mind, and the will are functions of the heart, which means our mental faculties are seriously injured by sin. Our will is corrupt, disordered by sin. Our affections are tethered to a sinful mind and will which means we hate what we should love. Instead of fearing God, we fear man. All this means we need a new heart and we receive it in the new birth (Jer. 31:33; Jn. 3:3).
