“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Home security systems are doing a brisk business. Self-protection is a reasonable act and illustrates the plight of the human race. Idols throughout the world and history are created to allay our fears. Psalm 46 was written in a time of great crisis. We don’t know which one in Israel’s story, but in essence it says that the God of Jacob is our fortress. Martin Luther’s famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress,” was based on this psalm. God is a refuge, unchanging in whom we find shelter, a place of rest and asylum (Isa. 25:4). God is our strength, providing courage as we trust in Him. The following says it well; “Even in our darkest moments, when life has become so painful as to seem unendurable, God is with us. We wait and watch for the Lord’s deliverance, knowing we can trust Him in spite of our feelings” (“Fee and Stuart”). Are you finding your God to be big enough for any and every situation in life? He alone provides security. I can have stability in a time of pressure. I can cope with life to the extent that I am thinking right about God and myself.
