“And he said to them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.’” Mark 10:11-12

What if after reading what Jesus says about divorce, what is a divorced person to do? In our current culture there are relatively few who have not been impacted by divorce in one way or another. In a final assertion about marriage and divorce, Jesus makes it clear that God’s standards for marriage and divorce, when violated, can result in sinful decisions. According to the New Testament, divorce is forbidden with two exceptions: marital unfaithfulness and when an unbeliever deserts the believer (1 Cor 7:12-16). Many biblical interpreters believe that in such situations remarriage is permissible. In all cases broken marriages require repentance (what sins have been committed), forgiveness, and reconciliation, if possible. If divorce is in your past, have you fulfilled your biblical obligation. We can’t say, “it’s just water under the bridge.” God always has a path forward where He can be obeyed and a life of service for Him is open.
