“He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. . . . As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” Psalm 2:4,6

What is God’s reaction to the haughty words of these pygmy human rulers? The spotlight in Psalm 2:1-3 is on God the Father. In 2:4-6 it is upon God the Son. Arrogant, pompous world leaders plot to rebel against the God of the universe. What does God do? He laughs. This is not a laugh of amusement or delight. Man thinks he can defy God and get away with it. He simply laughs at these imbeciles. God’s moral laws remain in force. Try to erase them and see what happens. God has spoken in the creation order. His infallible Word demolishes human wisdom. Today God speaks in grace. One day He will speak in wrath. Actually, He already is. God turns the proud over to a banquet of consequences by removing the restraints to evil (Romans 1:18-32). A horror show results. But here is the triumph. God has chosen to exalt His Son over the nations. The King in Jerusalem, Jesus Christ, will be the end of the rebellion against His rule. May the Holy Spirit ever keep us from becoming mentally distant from the wonders of God’s redemptive plan in Jesus Christ.
