“Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?'” John 14:5

The famous western humorist, Will Rogers, is purported to have said, “I don’t need to go anywhere. I’m already there.” This is more than just a cute quip. It leads us to a question that Thomas, a disciple of Jesus, asked. Thomas was something of a pessimist. As he thought about the mission of Jesus in Jerusalem, he was prepared to die (Jn. 11:16). It has been said that Thomas was a man who liked the feel of solid facts under his feet. He always kept well within the limits of his knowledge. D.A. Carson pulls up the file on Thomas when he says Thomas’s question (Jn. 15:6) “revealed a man who was confused by life and felt that its riddles were insolvable.” Jesus gave an answer that went well beyond any set of directions “Waze” could have given him. Getting to the Father was what Jesus was all about. He alone provides access to God. All religious, ethical, and moral codes don’t lead to God. It is only in Jesus that the true God is found. Only He can confer eternal life. There you have it. The key to getting into God’s heaven is through faith in the Way-Maker, Jesus Christ.

“The sea enters into the rivers before the rivers can run into the sea. In like manner, God, comes to us before we go to Him; and heaven enters into our souls before we can enter into heaven.” Peter Drelincourt
