“Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.” Psalm 78:17
August 8, 2022
If you took a “yet” word-comb and ran it through Psalm 78 (all seventy two verses), it appears five instructive times (vv. 9, 17, 23, 38, 56). The entire psalm is a history lesson in Israel’s rebellion and God’s faithfulness. Over a period of 450 years from Israel’s youth to her adulthood we get the following theological tune: a famous tribe of warriors (yet) ran off when the battle began. God did an abundance of miracles for His people, yet they accused Him of not being able to provide for them. Israel doubted God’s ability to take care of them, yet He rained down manna for them to eat. A blessed people lied to Him, yet He forgave their sin and did not destroy them. God brought them into the promised land, and yet they refused to do what He told them. But “yet” how often has God been faithful to us and we treat Him shabbily. It would be a good thing if we paused and thought through all the wonderful things God has done for us, and best of all how He has provided a Savior for us. Take a moment and hum amazing grace. We would blush to think of times of neglect of His precious promises, when His patience and gracious discipline made us bow our backs in resentment, and yet there is God with outstretched arms waiting to receive us into the glorious kingdom He has prepared from all eternity. A time to pray: “Lord, forgive me for the times I have allowed the exposition of the Word and exhortations to love you more, to roll off my back like water off a duck’s back.”
