Older Men

“Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.” Titus 2:2

What the church needs is older men who have the reputation as God-pursuers. The apostle Paul tasked Titus to establish strong churches on the island of Crete. The culture in Crete was one that was notorious as a haven for compulsive liars, drug addiction, alcoholism, and immorality. The great need was for churches ablaze with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The healthy church is to be made up of older men who have blazed a trail that is worth following. Call them the gray beards, men probably over sixty. They are to be clear in their thinking on how to balance life’s demands (“temperate”). How we do need men of this caliber today; men not intoxicated with the values of this world. Men, how are you at controlling your appetites? Don’t let over indulgence ruin your health. There is the danger of thinking, “after all these years I owe it to myself,” or “I can’t take it anymore.” Let’s all pull together to encourage and pray that the older men in our lives will radiate wisdom and that their godly reputations will not be tarnished.

“Lord, I thank you for the older men who have been a powerful influence for Christ in my life.”
