Serious-Minded Men

“Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.” Titus 2:2

Have you known or do you know some spiritually, serious-minded older men? Hopefully you have. These are the kind of men that should be noticeably present in Bible-believing churches. “Dignified” is the word Paul uses. How blessed we are to be acquainted with men whose lives are being lived in the light of eternity. This is the quality of the accumulated effect of maturity in Christ. Associated with this is older men who do not have their minds cluttered with the folly of unwise thinking (“self-controlled”). Such men are the balanced wheels in the church congregation, keeping it on a steady course. Older men are to possess a trust in God that weathers the storms of life. They are sound in the faith. This includes knowing their theology and how to apply it. Watch out, men, don’t let a cynical and embittered spirit take over your outlook on life. This sends a message to those who are younger. You won’t wake up one day and suddenly be “sound in the faith.” Pray for the older Christian men you know.
