“And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not stayed like one of these.” Matthew 6:28-29

Have you noticed “weed flowers” that grow in the wild on their own? The arrangement of their colors is worth any table-setting. Solomon’s wardrobe couldn’t match the beauty of wildflowers. The fashion industry knows how to create dissatisfaction with what is in our closets. Adam and Eve’s first attempt to deal with sin and guilt was by clothing. Would it be fig leaves or animal skins? God settled that one. But what about us? Why do we worry about the clothes we wear? One of the signs of ancient Israel’s moral and spiritual decline was the way women felt the need to decorate themselves with expensive clothing and jewelry (Isa. 3:13ff.). But don’t make the mistake of thinking dressing down is a sign dedication to God. Don’t treat people on the basis of what they wear (Jas. 2:2,3). If, as Christians, we want to dazzle people meditate on this thought: There is a “spectacular reason not to worry. God is giving you a life that is radiant, indestructible, and full of glory. You will dazzle. If God so adorns mere wildflowers with glory how much more will he make you as radiant as himself!” (David Powlison, “Seeing With New Eyes”). The point is simply this. Are we giving more attention to our outward, personal appearance than to the desires of our heart and obedience to God?

Reflection:
Is the money I spend on clothes and personal appearance disproportionate to what I give to God’s work?
Does my personal appearance send the wrong message about my true identity in Jesus Christ?
