“O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.” Psalm 139:1-3

How safe are you in God’s thoughts? Too many Christians have a shrunken God. But not David. He was surrounded by murderers, difficult people and difficult circumstances all his life. Yes, he brought some of this on himself. But there is a bigger picture, even in our own lives. David was confident in the midst of it all. He was a man after God’s own heart. Are we? Do I cherish God. The stability we need is found in God alone. Our God is big enough when we realize that He knows everything there is to know. Our cup should run over with thanksgiving. God knows all my thoughts, motives, and plans. He will never misjudge us. Whatever hardships God sends to us they are perfectly suited to who I am and what I need. It was the famous British preacher, Charles Spurgeon, who said, “There is chaff in all our wheat, and the Lord divides them with unerring precision.” We might say there is pulp in my juice. There is no one among us who has “no pulp.” Am I allowing God’s perfections to rule my thoughts? Let those tears flow toward God, not away from Him.

“God exists in reality and is not a spiritual medicine invented by our fears, it must follow that life’s secret very largely consists in holding him in our thoughts as much as possible and especially in times of fear and dread.” Maurice Roberts, The Thought of God.
