Thousands in and around Jerusalem came to faith in Jesus Christ. The conversion of so many created some special challenges. One factor was the excommunication from the synagogue and persecution. Also, famine, political unrest, and unemployment placed many new believers in financial need. But the grace of generosity found its source in the springs of new life in Christ as it should in us. All who are in Christ must lay hold of the realization that everything we have belongs to the Lord. Voluntary, joyful giving is made possible by a good work ethic and wise financial planning. The early church was not monastic or communistic. Generosity in giving and sharing with the needy reflects the eternal values bound up in the gospel. It is wrong to read socialism into what was happening in the believing community in the book of Acts. Socialism at its core is a Christian heresy. “Socialism is a political religion whose God is the State and whose priests are the bureaucrats. It is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, and its inherent virtue is the equal distribution of misery” (Winston Churchill). We can experience the grace of generosity in the words of John Wesley, “when we earn as much as we can, save as much as we can, and give as much as we can.”
