Psalm 95 is an enthronement psalm which gave Israel the opportunity to acknowledge that the Lord is a great King above all the gods. This is a poetic way of denying the reality of other gods. Think of Israel’s spiritual location among the nations surrounding her. Israel worshiped the Lord of the universe, her covenant God, the only true God. This is an invitation to read all ten verses of Psalm 95. Create your own melody and hum it through if you like. C. H. Spurgeon’s words stir the correct emotion; “It has about it a ring like that of church bells, and like the bells it sounds both merrily and solemnly, at first ringing out a lively peal, and then dropping into a funeral knell as if tolling at the funeral of the generation which perished in the wilderness.” The supremacy of God calls for an exuberant response. Do you need some exuberance about God? This is not the only mood in worship but it lifts our minds heavenward which our dying civilization needs to hear as God’s people gather to bring praises to our Creator and Redeemer.
